So we've got this terrible, terrible situation in East Timor. It's a real ugly mess - state-sanctioned murder and terror. Predictably, the ``liberal'' corporate media have whitewashed the historical record, providing an obfuscating light that completely ignores the blatant racism and hypocrisy implicit in the agonizingly slow, official U.S. response.
What follows is a little history that you won't find in most of the accounts that the media have been dishing out ever since the East Timorese voted for independence, despite reports from Australian journalists leading up to the vote that ``hundreds of modern assault rifles, grenades and mortars are being stockpiled ...
