When Jimmy Stewart first heard that folks back in his hometown wanted to build a museum to honor him, the shy actor politely declined.
Stewart never was one for pomp or publicity - and he sure as heck didn't want some kind of shrine plopped in this quaint southwestern Pennsylvania town, where he was born and raised.
But when townspeople told him that building a museum to honor their native son could give the town a financial boost, Stewart agreed.
If it helped the people of Indiana, so be it, he said. Just keep it modest.
Stewart died in July 1997 at 89.
