Helen Stafford, the matriarch of Tacoma's black community, is celebrating her 100th birthday today, and so is the rest of the city.
Today has been declared Helen Stafford Day by the City Council, in recognition of Stafford's work in the community during the past 72 years.
Over the years, Stafford founded or joined dozens of civic organizations and clubs, serving as a mentor, leader and teacher for countless young black people - her work celebrated with numerous awards.
She's seen a lot of changes since her arrival in 1927 - and helped make some of those changes happen.
She was newly married then, a graduate of Kansas State University ...
