In 1992, Alison Leber walked into a sliver of shop called Brie & Bordeaux because she'd heard they were looking for a manager. It turned out the owners were looking for a buyer. Leber, who knew a thing or two about wine and cheese from her years at places like Gerard's Relais de Lyons, Columbia Winery and Larry's Markets, can smell an opportunity when it's poured in her glass. She finagled some financing and bought the place.
With it came cheese wizard Karin Collins, who can sniff out a ripe Camembert at 40 paces. The pair combined their wine and cheese aptitude, expanded their wares and put in a small kitchen. Four years later, they quadrupled the square footage ...
