Facing a gaping tax-revenue hole left by Initiative 695, the King County Council yesterday whacked the 2000 county budget to 9.7 percent below 1999 spending levels.
The reductions, set forth in a $2.43 billion spending plan adopted on an 11-2 vote, will leave the county with 371 fewer employees than the current year's budget allocated.
That will cut the workforce to 13,100 - primarily through attrition and leaving vacant positions unfilled.
But the operating fund budget - financing discretionary, general government operations, mostly with local tax and fee revenue - rises by 5.7 percent, to $453 million.
