In his seminal work, ``Red Sox Triumphs and Tragedies,'' Ed Walton writes: ``The Boston fan looks upon the New Yorker as less knowledgeable, smug, greedy, flaunting.'' Walton says the Red Sox fan ``harbors a deep, ingrown hatred of the Yankee pinstripe.''
The simple term ``pond scum'' works for me, but if forced into deep self-analysis, I suppose Walton is pretty much on target. I mean, if the Yankees are playing the Saddam Hussein Traveling All-Stars, the Red Sox fan has no problem choosing sides. We'll pick the Sultan of Squat and his Baghdad Bombers every time.
