The controversial bones known as Kennewick Man look more Asian than European or Native American, potentially jeopardizing tribal legal claims to the remains.
A court-appointed scientific panel concluded in a report released yesterday that the skeletal remains look most like the Ainu, an indigenous sub-population in Japan with ancient roots in southeast Asia.
``Kennewick Man has the strongest (skeletal) affinity with southern Asians, not Native Americans or Europeans,'' said Joseph Powell, a physical anthropologist at the University of New Mexico and member of the panel.
