When ``The Goblin Market'' was first published in 1862 - and then when it became the basis for a stage musical in 1986 - people were impressed. But they weren't sure why.
Some Victorian commentators saw Christina Rossetti's mysterious adventure poem as a Christian parable about death and resurrection, purity and sacrifice. Or maybe it was an allegorical warning about all the foreigners who were turning mid-19th century London into a veritable heathen bazaar - not at all a proper influence for English ladies.
Eventually, ``The Goblin Market'' was filed under ``literature, children's, adventure fantasy division,'' right beside that equally sinister and ...
