What the Polar Star's departure from Hobart, Tasmania, lacked in excitement yesterday, the sea provided two hours later with 50-knot winds and 8-foot seas that sent the ship heaving.
We had slipped out of the Tasmanian capital's MacQuarie Wharf under a bright blue sky, with little fanfare and only one farewell - that provided by one of the crew's new Australian girlfriend, who waved as tugboats guided us from our berth.
But the 400-foot Seattle-based Coast Guard icebreaker and its crew are used to going about their work a very long way from home, without much ceremony. The Polar Star has a big job to do in the days ahead - breaking through the Antarctic ...
