Sailors crossing the Atlantic Ocean for centuries have cherished the Azores as a precious haven of dry land between the American and European continents.
Transatlantic yachtsmen still make a beeline for the nine Portuguese islands. Increasingly, they are being joined by tourists seeking a natural, unspoiled escape from the stress of city life.
