The Mariners' last game in Texas was their high point this year. They shut out the powerful Rangers, moving their record above .500 at the season's halfway mark, and left town in second place, five games back.
Within a week, however, they had fallen to third, and they've never risen higher. Last night, they returned to the Ballpark in Arlington, which was freshly decorated with a ``1999 AL West Champions'' banner above center field.
As the Mariners scuffle to finish above .500, the Rangers are trying to secure home-field advantage in the playoffs. They gained ground in that effort with a 3-2 win over the Mariners last night.
