Dear Dr. John: My daughter's class at school has a young female guinea pig. The guinea pig recently developed a hard swelling under the chin that has been draining fluid, and we're not sure what it might be. What do you think it is? The kids love this guinea pig. - J.P.
Dear J.P.: Guinea pigs, like rabbits, are susceptible to a bacteria called Pasteurella multocida that can cause a lesion like the one you describe. The discharge from these lesions is usually white and creamy looking. You should take the animal to a veterinarian for examination and treatment.
