LOS ANGELES _ Paul Schrade's devotion to the Kennedys consumed much of his life _ and nearly ended it.
Thirty-two years ago, at Los Angeles' Ambassador Hotel, Schrade suffered a head wound in the spasm of gunfire that snuffed out Robert F. Kennedy's presidential campaign. Kennedy died a day later. Schrade's recovery took four months.
"It was most painful losing Bobby," said Schrade, 75, a retired labor organizer who was a Kennedy lieutenant in the 1968 California primary election. He also worked for John F. Kennedy during the 1960 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, which marked the dawn of the New Frontier.
