Although the reality is rarely as neat and tidy, history likes to tie up decades in fetching little bundles and label them 'roaring', 'swinging' or in the case of the 1950s just plain drab.
The 60s especially lends itself to such broad generalisation. Beginning with the election of John F Kennedy, who seemed at the time to embody a new spirit of dynamism and idealism it closed with the break-up of the Beatles, which in itself reflected the decade's decline into pessimism and isolationism.
