NEW ORLEANS -- As other classes of trade continue to encroach on drug stores' traditional profit centers, general merchandise is playing a critical role in the nation's pharmacies, suppliers and buyers at this year's National Association of Chain Drug Stores Marketplace Conference said.
"General merchandise has always been a very strong category in drug stores," noted American Greetings Corp. vice president of corporate trade development Bill Parsons. "But because of other retailers taking away business in some categories that have been traditionally strong for drug stores, general merchandise is now more important than ever."
