Aug. 16--They built empires based on the personal computer, but on Tuesday Microsoft Corp. and Compaq Computer Corp. announced a new product to deliver Internet service without a computer.
The iPaq Home Internet Appliance with MSN Companion, which Compaq will begin selling within two weeks, is aimed at people who want a simple, stripped down machine that gets them online quickly. The six-pound device is smaller than a laptop, with a 10-inch screen and a wireless keyboard.
Running on a Microsoft operating system, it offers access to the Web solely through Microsoft's Internet service provider, MSN. Consumers sign up for the access service at the same time ...
