Article: Friendship Heights seeking county OK of outdoor-smoking ban.(Metropolitan)(Maryland)

The village of Friendship Heights wants to go forward with its ban on smoking in all public places - including city streets, sidewalks and parks - and is waiting only for the approval of the Montgomery County Council.

"The overall reason for it is that tobacco is killing 400,000 people every year," said Alfred Muller, mayor of Friendship Heights and a doctor who has practiced internal medicine for 34 years.

Mr. Muller said he wrote the ordinance because smoking "is the single most preventable cause of death in the country."
