This study is devoted to the work of Annette von Droste-H[ddot{u}]lshoff, one of the most prominent German women of letters, and to her self-perception as a poet. It is the evolution of that self-image which is celebrated by the book's title. The ambivalences which Droste transcends are the restrictions imposed on her by a Christian Biedermeier environment which she overcame by a later assertion of her poetic vocation.
