ILGWU, NORTHEAST FIRMS OPEN TALKS
Affiliates of the ILGWU will begin negotiations today with the apparel industry in the Northeast for new three-year contracts covering some 125,000 workers concentrated in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New England.
Jay Mazur, ILGWU president, said the union expects the negotiations will be "very difficult." The talks will be with sportswear, dress, coat and suit and rainwear manufacturers.
Existing contracts with the industry were negotiated in 1985, and all expire in 1988, most at midnight on May 31.
