Controversy has always surrounded Pearl Jam: Since the band broke big out of post-Nirvana Seattle in the early '90s with its angst-filled grunge sound; since it took on Ticketmaster and canceled its 1994 summer tour over high ticket prices; and most of all since nine fans were crushed to death at a concert just a few weeks ago in Denmark.
When you think of concert deaths, you think one word: Cincinnati, the place where 11 Who fans were killed in a crush of bodies in 1979. Until June 20, that is. Now you think, too, of Pearl Jam at the Roskilde Festival near Copenhagen. Nine fans were killed and dozens hurt when the crowd surged toward the stage.
