The textile collector Kate Fowler Merle-Smith had wide ranging interests, but was detailed and methodical when it came to documenting her acquisitions. At first she was intrigued by textiles and folk costumes from Europe and Asia as ethnographic objects. Then she became fascinated by contemporary dress fabrics designed by the leading designers of the 1920s and 1930s for the American silk industry and available at department stores, among them R H. Macy's and B. Altman. Eventually her collection totaled some five hundred examples of dress fabrics, including not only silks but also new and experimental fabrics such as rayon.
