'Tis the season for wildfowl to start getting nervous. The glorious twelfth marked the start of the hunting season for grouse, and other game will soon be finding themselves the target of eager hunters.
Wild duck, hare, pigeon, snipe, wigeon and woodcock all come into season this month, with goose, partridge and teal in September.
For those who are sensitive about the idea of birds being bagged by a group of weekend warriors wearing tweed and bearing shotguns, there is the less violent alternative of farmed game, available from butchers and supermarkets.
