People who smoke cigars experience a 30% increased death rate from heart disease before age 75, according to a Nov 7, 1999, press release from the American Cancer Society. In a study conducted by the society, researchers evaluated data from more than 121,000 males age 30 years or older who identified themselves as "current cigar smokers" when they enrolled in the study in 1982. The men reported never having smoked cigarettes or pipes, nor having been diagnosed with heart disease or diabetes. By 1991, more than 2,500 of these men had died from coronary heart disease.
