In July 1997, the surgical services department at Santa Rosa (Calif) Memorial Hospital, a 225-bed acute care hospital, was characterized by perceived inefficiencies and low staff member morale--problems that the chief of staff experienced firsthand as a surgeon. Several factors contributed to the low morale in the department.
* Surgeons and anesthesia care providers were demanding greater efficiency and more support services due to the continuously increasing number of managed care patients.
