Trends toward increasing numbers of subjects undergoing surgery and discharge the same day has dramatically changed perioperative nursing. Perioperative nurses sometimes question the wisdom of these discharges. This research study addresses one aspect of patient discharge: When is it safe to discharge a patient who is unable to void? Researchers tested a treatment algorithm for management of bladder function after outpatient surgery with either general or local anesthesia.
