This diverse process, so integral to printing as to be largely unnoticed, is loaded with opportunities to improve production efficiency and contain costs.
Materials handling--the movement of materials and product through a printing plant--may account for a whopping 60% of all direct and indirect manufacturing labor costs. Moreover, it is a task that adds no salable value to the production process, only cost.
Still, despite its enormous impact on manufacturing costs, few printing companies recognize the importance of managing and improving materials handling practices.
