Although about one-third of the students in Madison schools are racial and ethnic minorities, only 8 percent of teachers are nonwhite and a growing number of people both inside and outside the district are trying to narrow the gap.
Starting this summer a group of citizens, including some teachers, began to gather information about the district's hiring practices and is also gathering signatures on petitions calling on the district to hire more minority teachers.
Group members were scheduled to visit several schools this week during registration to gain support from parents, and others want to talk to new teachers during their orientation next week.
