RADICAL POPULISM IN AUSTRIA
In 1988, on the fiftieth anniversary of Germany's annexation of Austria, protesters filled the streets of Vienna. Chancellor Vranitsky claimed that balance was needed:
Austria has a special duty to occupy itself with its past, a duty which springs from its double role, namely that of victim and that of culprit.
Official ceremonies marked the event. President Waldheim addressed the country on television. As he spoke, thousands gathered in the streets and called for his resignation.
