A report issued May 10, 2000, by the General Accounting Office (GAO), Mental Health Parity Act: Despite New Federal Standards, Mental Health Benefits Remain Limited, finds that employers' responses to the Mental Health Parity Act have had little effect on employees' access to mental health services. The law, which is to expire in about 1 5 months, states that annual and lifetime dollar limits for mental health coverage in employer-sponsored group health plans may not be more restrictive than for all medical and surgical coverage.
