Born and raised in Hawaii, Gerry Lopez took up surfing in 1958 at age 10. By the time he entered high school, it was a sure bet his surfing hobby would turn into a career. He started making a living from it at 16 by building his own surfboards. The flexible work schedule allowed him to surf when the best waves were up. In time Lopez was able to make a name for himself in Hawaii and, eventually, internationally, winning about a thousand surf championships in his career. No longer competing on a professional basis, he still builds Gerry Lopez surf boards.
