Your Smoke -- Their Health Cigarette smoke is known to cause many problems, both for the active smoker (the one who "smokes" the cigarette) and the passive smoker (the person who's exposed to the smoke). Passive smokers are exposed to two kinds of smoke: mainstream and sidestream. The smoke that comes out of the "butt end" of the cigarette is the mainstream smoke. It's the less dangerous of the two, with smaller amounts of dangerous substances. Unfortunately, it accounts for only 15 percent of the smoke in a smokey room. Sidestream smoke, which comes from the lit end of a cigarette, has much higher concentrations of carbon monoxide, nicotine, ammonia, tar, naphthalene, ...
