CHICAGO -- Transdermal nitric oxide administered to women with growth-retarded fetuses may improve neonatal neurologic outcomes, according to a poster presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Gynecologic Investigation.
"This is a preliminary study, with very small numbers, but it suggests a protective effective of nitric oxide against fetal brain damage," said Dr. Emanuela Marinoni, an ob.gyn. and perinatologist at the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University La Sapienza, Rome.
Nitric oxide, produced by both the placenta and the fetus, is important in regulating uteroplacental blood flow.
