ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. - Cauterization of hydrosalpinges before in vitro fertilization is comparable to salpingectomy in improving pregnancy rates, according to the results of a small prospective trial.
Hydrosalpinges are thought to hinder implantation through leakage of fluid into the uterus, Dr. Laurel Stadtmauer said at the annual meeting of the South Atlantic Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
The presence of hydrosalpinges is associated with reduced pregnancy rates in in vitro fertilization (IVF) and in women with such defects salpingectomy is often performed to bolster their chances of a favorable outcome.
