Remember when Arizona refused to celebrate Martin Luther King Day? Arizonans rejected the proposed holiday as too narrow - commemorating a single ethnic group and not representative of American values.
When their incalcitrance proved embarrassing (and financially damaging), however, they added King's birthday to the state's calendar.
In the intervening years, the King holiday has proved neither narrow nor un-American. What started as an attempt to celebrate one great African American has become much larger.
