Faced with a devastating slump in tourism blamed on political violence and floods, Kenya's government announced major cutbacks yesterday for wildlife sanctuaries.
Visits to the parks have plunged over the past six months to 60 percent below projections, said David Western, director of the Kenya Wildlife Service, the government agency that oversees the sanctuaries.
Hotels have laid off many workers, and some Indian Ocean coast hotels and game park camps have closed.
``We don't expect any immediate turnaround,'' Western said.
The number of tourists traveling to this East African nation was down 23 percent in 1997 from the previous year.
