The metal that glitters in the Pacific Northwest these days is not gold, it's aluminum.
Or so you'd think, to judge from the millions that aluminum producers have or want to pour into updated and new smelters.
What's striking about the spending plans is that a few years ago many wondered whether the aluminum industry had much of a future in the Pacific Northwest - a region that hasn't seen a new aluminum smelter in almost three decades.
