Baseball purists have been quietly set down in order, hit with another loss. Like it or not, the new Mariner ballpark will be called Safeco Field.
Think of the squandered possibilities to symbolize the uniqueness of our region. Coffee Grounds comes to mind. Grunge Field. Why not? Or as an homage to our rain, how about the Water Polo Grounds.
As a tribute to Mariner right fielder Jay Buhner, The Bone Yard might have been an excellent choice. Or The House that Griffey Built. Cora's Corral? Well, maybe not.
Of course, the Mariners could have nixed the $40 million they'll get from selling the stadium-naming rights, and gone with a good, solid name ...
