As manager of the Class A Lake Elsinore (Calif.) Storm, former Mariner shortstop Mario Mendoza is trying to build a reputation that has little to do with his former baseball life, even as his name - as in ``The Mendoza Line,'' denoting a .200 batting average - remains synonymous with weak hitting.
During Mendoza's nine-year career in the big leagues (1974-82 with Pittsburgh, Seattle and Texas), he was known for his defensive excellence.
Although he managed to sustain a big league career for almost a decade, his name nonetheless came to represent poor hitting.
