Seattle Public Schools Superintendent John Stanford will be receiving a bone marrow transplant using the stem cell method.

Stem cell transplants, which have been done at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center since 1995, are based on the same principle as traditional bone marrow transplants. In both cases, donor stem cells are used to generate a new bone marrow system in the patient.

Stem cells are normally produced in the bone marrow and are the progenitors of all other types of blood cells.
