Every night, after work as a secretary in a New York City office, a slender young woman in her 20s took the subway to the Mosholu Parkway station in the Bronx, N.Y., nearly the end of the line.
Then she would walk almost a mile to a workers' cooperative, four six-story buildings set in Van Cortlandt Park, where she lived with her parents and their five other children.
