One of the planet's experts on giant clams - beautiful clams with iridescent blue and green hues, clams bigger than buckets, clams you would never dream of eating unless you lived in the South Pacific - is a Tacoma man who keeps clams for pets.
Ryan Gent, 35, taught himself reef aquarium science while working in customer service at a local tile store and raising a family of kids and clams in a rented house near Tacoma Mall.
He recently delivered a scholarly paper, ``Keeping Tridacna Clams,'' at the Western Marine Conference in Tukwila, attended by some 300 scientific experts in aquariums.
