Embattled President Suharto, succumbing to the worst unrest in three decades, said today he would relinquish power after reshuffling his Cabinet and holding general elections.
In a national televised address, Suharto rejected calls for his immediate resignation and said he would stay in power to prepare the nation of 200 million people for a new political era, including elections for a new Parliament.
But he gave no specific time for the election or his leaving office but said: ``I will not be prepared to be elected any more.''
Looking relaxed and confident the 76-year-old president said repeatedly he would have ``no problem'' resigning - but ...
