A new, $80 million vessel will join the Alaska Marine Highway System fleet next month, providing ferry service between Bellingham and Skagway, Alaska. Once a month, the ship will cross the Gulf of Alaska to Valdez, providing the first-ever connecting service between Alaska's Southeast and Southwest ferry routes.
The new MV Kennicott, built in Mississippi, is the first addition to Alaska's state-operated ferry system in more than 20 years. The 380-foot-long ship can carry up to 750 passengers and 120 vehicles. Its 100 staterooms include full-size cabins as well as smaller ``roomettes'' for two. The ship also features a dining room, solarium and theater.
