The Mariners have a new debate. This one has nothing to do with cost overruns at the new ballpark or short-term returns on Randy Johnson.
Safeco Field, scheduled to open in July 1999, will be sodded with predominantly Kentucky bluegrass. Critics of the plan say Freddy Garcia, one of the minor-leaguers acquired in the Johnson deal, has a better chance of flourishing at Safeco than the green stuff he will be playing on.
Using technical turf terminology, the Mariners plan to install a mixture of 80-percent Kentucky bluegrass and 20-percent perennial ryegrass. The mix is designed to yield a beautiful playing surface, thick and lush and hardy. It is the ...
