Evidence that Atlantic salmon may have spawned in a Vancouver Island river has highlighted fears that the non-native fish might pose a threat to the Northwest's struggling native salmon and steelhead.

A British Columbia official said juvenile Atlantic salmon taken from the Tsitika River appeared to be the first known products of natural spawning by the species in a Pacific Coast stream.

Critics charge that Atlantic salmon, which are native to the Atlantic Ocean and do not occur naturally in the Pacific, spread disease and may compete or interbreed with already declining native fish.
