After waiting more than 70 years, the Makah tribe will likely have to wait until next month before it returns to sea in search of a gray whale to kill.
The hunt has been postponed because the federal government is steadfastly holding the tribe to its promise not to kill so-called resident whales. The huge animals feed and live for months close to shore, making them easy targets for tribal whalers.
By agreeing - under pressure from the federal government - to hunt only migrating gray whales the Makah have boxed themselves into a dangerous corner.
