In 1977, Chris Pearson, former president of the Associated Student Body at the University of Washington, wrote a note to one of his professors:
``You have unleashed legions of peace mongers, Carbs,'' he wrote after taking the course Dissent and Affirmation taught by Richard J. Carbray, a widely known educator and peace activist.
Mr. Carbray died Oct. 16 in Seattle at the age of 81.
He was born in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, on Nov. 24, 1916, and moved to Seattle with his family in 1922. He grew up on Capitol Hill and attended St. Joseph's School for Boys and Seattle Preparatory School.
