Barnes & Noble Inc., the largest U.S. bookseller, plans to start selling a broad range of music and videos on its Internet site early next year as it steps up competition with Seattle bookseller Amazon.com Inc. and other online retailers.
Barnesandnoble.com now offers a limited selection of holiday-oriented compact discs and videos. Amazon, the No. 1 online bookseller, began selling music this year and plans to open a video section. And just yesterday, K-Tel International Inc. said it will list its 250,000 music titles for sale on Playboy Enterprises Inc.'s playboy.com Web site. Terms weren't disclosed.
