Though it never received much fanfare upon its release in 1967, ``The Young Girls of Rochefort'' is a magical musical that's been painstakingly restored to lustrous pastel perfection by the filmmaker Agnes Varda, who was married for many years to the film's director and lyricist, Jacques Demy, who died in 1990.

The showcase of Demy's career was 1964's ``The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.'' That film was an instant success and made a star of Catherine Deneuve.
