Scientific knowledge about one of the least understood parts of the globe - the Arctic Ocean - took a leap forward yesterday as information collected by U.S. and Russian military researchers was released publicly.
``Some of science's most sought-after data have come in from the cold,'' said Vice President Al Gore.
The first of four planned compact discs was released in ceremonies at the National Geographic Society. The discs contain millions of observations collected in the Arctic Ocean over 40 years by Russian and American researchers, largely for military purposes.
